Karl Hoefelmayr (biotechnologist)

Karl Hoefelmayr (born January 16, 1867 in Kaufbeuren ; † June 9, 1940 ) was a German biotechnologist and cheese manufacturer.

Life

After attending grammar school in Regensburg, Karl Hoefelmayr studied at the model agricultural school in Freising , where he became a member of the Corps Agronomia in 1884 . He then studied for two semesters at the Munich Polytechnic . In 1890 he went to the Agricultural University in Paris for a year to train in the chemical-bacteriological laboratory there with Émile Duclaux . He was the first to succeed in making camembert using cultivated cultures that he had isolated from camembert microorganisms and grown in milk. After his return from France he started in the Allgäu under the brand name Edelweiß with the production of Camembert using cultivated cultures, first in Haslach (Wangen) , then in Albrechts and from 1894 in Kempten (Allgäu) . In 1907 he started producing milk sugar . In 1918 he began marketing powdered milk as baby and child food. After his death in 1940, his sons Hanns Hoefelmayr and Karl Hoefelmayr took over the management of the company.
