Karl Hoffmann (Indo-Europeanist)

Karl Hoffmann (born February 26, 1915 in Hof am Regen ; † May 21, 1996 in Erlangen ) was a German Indo-Germanist , Indo-Iranian and Iranist .

Life

Hoffmann grew up in Munich and studied there with Ferdinand Sommer from 1934 onwards. In 1941, he was with a thesis on The altindoarischen words -nd- especially in Rgveda doctorate . In 1951 he completed his habilitation in Munich with the work Der Injunktiv im Veda. A synchronous functional study (Heidelberg 1967). From 1952 to 1955 he taught comparative linguistics at the University of Saarbrücken , from 1955 to 1983 at the chair for comparative Indo-European linguistics at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . He turned down a call to Bonn (1962). Since 1972 he has been a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . His students include Rüdiger Schmitt , Gert Klingenschmitt , Michael Witzel , Johanna Narten and Heiner Eichner . His student Michael Witzel describes the Erlanger Institute, which was animated by Hoffmann, as a gurukula and says: "a situation that I never have met with anywhere else" (Indo-Iranian Journal 40, p. 245).
