Johanna Narten

Johanna Narten (born October 5, 1930 ; † July 15, 2019 ) was a German professor for Indo-European and Indo-Iranian studies at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . The Narten ablaut is named after her in the Indo-European original language .

Education

Narten studied Indo-European studies with a focus on Indo-Iranian languages - especially Vedic and Avestian - with Karl Hoffmann . With him she also wrote the dissertation The sigmatic aorists in the Veda (1964). In 1968 she published her work on the 'proterodynamic' root present , in which she shows the existence of a new class of verbs.

Since 1995 she and Regine Kahmann have been one of the first two female full members of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

For her 70th birthday in 2000 the Festschrift Anusantatyai: Festschrift for Johanna Narten for her 70th birthday was published.

She was buried in Uttenreuth .
