Karl Hoffmann (medic, 1885)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl Hoffmann (born October 21, 1885 in Medard , † December 22, 1941 in Cologne - Deutz ) was a general practitioner in Bielstein (Wiehl) .

Life

Hoffmann, who had been settled in Bielstein since 1921, was summoned to the camp of Russian prisoners of war in Wiehlmünden at the end of 1941 . He found the malnourished, partly wounded prisoners in a deplorable condition. The hygienic conditions were catastrophic and medical care was not available, as no doctor had been found to treat the Russians up to this point . It was only when an epidemic broke out and the guards feared for their own health that the non-commissioned officer, as camp manager, sought medical help. Against all warnings, Karl Hoffmann took on this task and provided the sick with medical help. Two thirds of the approximately 80 prisoners and part of the guards died of typhus . Hoffmann fell ill himself and died a few months later at the age of 56 in a hospital in Cologne-Deutz. He left behind his wife Anna Herta Laura geb. Radermacher, whom he married in Rosbach an der Sieg in 1932.

To commemorate the selfless commitment of the doctor, a street on the large square in front of the Bielstein school center has been named Dr.-Hoffmann-Platz and a memorial plaque has been placed in the secondary school.
