Charles I (Flanders)
Charles I , called the Good (* around 1085; † March 2, 1127 in Bruges ) was Count of Flanders . He is the son of King Canute IV (the saint) of Denmark and Adela of Flanders , daughter of Count Robert I.
Life
After his father was slain in 1086, his mother went back to Flanders with him. There he grew up at the court of his uncle Robert II and his cousin Baldwin VII and received a solid education. In 1117 he married Margaret of Clermont , daughter of Rainald II , Count of Clermont-en-Beauvaisis . In 1119, after the death of Baldwin VII, he followed him as Count of Flanders.
When the Crusader King of Jerusalem, Baldwin II , was captured by the Saracens in 1123 , Charles was proposed as king of Jerusalem and was considered a candidate for the royal dignity in the Roman-German Empire , whose crown was given to him by the Chancellor of the Archbishop of Cologne, Dietrich, offered in 1125. But he turned down both candidacies.
In 1127 he was murdered in the Church of St. Donatus in Bruges by members of a powerful family of servants whose influence he had restricted. He died without an heir. At the mediation of King Ludwig VI. of France, he was inherited by his second cousin, Wilhelm Clito . In 1884 he was canonized by the Catholic Church .
