Karl Knapp (local history researcher)

Karl Knapp (* 1933 in Griesheim ) is a German homeland researcher , author and hobby archaeologist.

Life

Knapp grew up in a working class family. From an early age he was active in the SPD local association. After passing the Abitur in 1954, he then completed training as an administrative officer at the city of Griesheim. In 1958 he became a secretary and three years later an inspector. Almost worked for several decades as a community employee in Griesheim, most recently he was the municipal director and as such was responsible for the finance department, personnel administration and public relations. 1995 went into retirement. Furthermore, Knapp was a member of the local court for 32 years from 1975 and acted as the deputy chairman of the local court during this time.

In addition to his professional career, Knapp worked as a local researcher and hobby archaeologist. He was particularly interested in the local history of Griesheim, on which he published several books. Furthermore, since the 1960s he has carried out archaeological research and excavations at over 100 sites. Here he was able to prove the settlement of the Griesheim area since the Neolithic .

In 1980 he received the Silver Medal of Honor from the French city of Bar-le-Duc for special services to the town twinning . Griesheim awarded him the bronze medal in 1980 and the silver merit plaque in 1995 for his voluntary work. In 2012 he was awarded the Hessian Order of Merit on ribbon in recognition of his activities in homeland and historical research as well as in honorary jurisdiction.

Knapp is widowed. The former mayor of Griesheim , Gabriele Winter, is his daughter.
