Karl Koch (botanist)

Karl Koch (born August 13, 1875 in Osnabrück ; † February 28, 1964 there ) was a German teacher, botanist and conservationist .

Life

Koch received his training at the Protestant preparatory institute and at the Protestant teachers' seminar in Osnabrück. He was a teacher of geography and biology in Kalkriese , Bramsche and Osnabrück, including at the local ev. Citizens' School / Möser-Mittelschule (boys) (April 1, 1908 until retirement September 30, 1935). From October 1, 1935, he held the post of vice principal at this school. As a substitute teacher worked in the Möser Middle School during the Second World War and also from May 1, 1945 to September 30, 1949. In addition, he was committed to landscape and nature conservation. He was particularly interested in researching the flora of the Osnabrück area. The main work he published in 1934 was the “Flora of the Osnabrück Government District and the Neighboring Areas”, the second edition of which appeared in 1958.

As the district commissioner for nature conservation, Koch campaigned for the designation of nature reserves and natural monuments. He built and looked after the first botanical garden in Osnabrück (destroyed in World War II) . From 1947 to 1958 he was chairman of the natural science association Osnabrück. The herbarium of approx. 6,000 specimens he created later came into the possession of the Natural Science Museum in Osnabrück.

Awards

Koch was honorary chairman of the Osnabrück Natural Science Association, recipient of the Justus Möser Medal of the City of Osnabrück (1945), corresponding member of the Natural History Society of Hanover (1948) and holder of the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class (1960).

In 1969 the city of Osnabrück recognized Koch's services as a pedagogue and botanist by naming a street after his name.
