Karl Kriete

Karl Kriete (born June 24, 1887 in Fähr / Blumenthal district , † October 24, 1968 in Bremen ) was a German painter and university professor.

Life

After studying at the Düsseldorf School of Applied Arts from 1905 to 1909, Kriete was a teacher at the Essen School of Applied Arts from 1912 . His teaching activities, for which he held a professorship from 1923, was interrupted by the First World War and ended in 1932. He then lived and worked in Worpswede until 1941 and then in Bremen- Burglesum .

During the period of National Socialism in Germany , Kriete had no opportunity to exhibit his works from 1935, but was able to continue working. In 1937 one of his works in the Kunsthalle Bremen was confiscated . In 1941 his library in Worpswede was confiscated by the Gestapo and he was not allowed to leave Worpswede for a week. In 1944 he was called up for military service.

The proceedings initiated by Kriete from 1950 to 1953 for recognition as a victim of National Socialism were refused.
