Karl Marlantes

Karl Marlantes (born December 24, 1944 in Astoria , Oregon USA ) is an American war veteran, businessman and author .

Life

Marlantes grew up in Seaside , Oregon, where his father was the headmaster of his high school . He was active on the football team and on the student council. Because of his academic achievements, he qualified for the National Merit Scholarship Program . His scholarship enabled him to study economics at Jonathan Edwards College at Yale University in New Haven , Connecticut in 1967 . There he played as a striker in the Yale rugby team and became a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity . At Yale he earned a bachelor's degree (BA).

With a Rhodes Scholarship , Marlantes continued his studies at University College Oxford. After one semester, he dropped out of college and volunteered for the United States Marine Corps in 1968 . During his service in the Vietnam War he was awarded the Navy Cross , the Bronze Star , two Navy Commendation Medals for bravery, the Purple Heart badge twice and the Air Medal ten times . After his combat mission in Vietnam , he worked for a year at the headquarters of the US Marine Corps. In 1970 he was discharged from the Marine Corps. He has since been receiving treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder , which is also the reason for the divorce from his first wife, with whom he has four children.

Marlantes went back to Oxford and graduated with a master's degree . He now lives in Waterville , Washington state and works as a corporate consultant abroad. In recent years he has published a book about the Vietnam War that has won multiple awards since its publication. Another book described the lives of soldiers who returned to civilian life from military service.

In 2011 he received the WY Boyd Literary Award for Excellence in Military Fiction and the Colby Award .
