Location of Waterville in Douglas County

Waterville is a small town ( Town ) and the county seat of Douglas County , in the US state of Washington . It is part of the Wenatchee - East Wenatchee Metropolitan Statistical Area . As of the 2010 United States Census , Waterville had 1,138 residents.

history

Waterville was founded in 1885 and parceled out the following year. The city was recognized under the Territorial Charter in 1889 , but this was repeated on May 12, 1890, after Washington joined the United States.

Founded in 1889 and designated the county seat of Douglas County, Waterville has had a rich history of agriculture, recreation and other economic trends.

In 1883 Stephen Boise occupied land on a shrub-steppe plateau in east Washington, high above a great loop of the Columbia River. Soon after, he built a hut and a well. The well gave large amounts of water - the only one available for miles around. Soon after, the place was named a county seat; the precious water gave the city of Waterville its name.

AT Greene bought Boise's claim in 1885 with the vision of building a city. He had an area of 16 hectares deed and parceled out to build the original city and named it Waterville. Waterville dignitaries wanted to get the county seat of the newly formed Douglas County. The problem was that Douglas County already had a county seat, a small town called Okanogan, six miles to the northeast. However, Okanogan was - despite several advantages - dry, not a single well gave a drop of water. The Waterville MPs brought a barrel of water to a political meeting in Okanogan and insisted that the county seat be moved to the source of that water. The plenipotentiaries bowed to public pressure on May 2, 1887 and declared Waterville the new county seat. On March 22, 1889, Waterville was recognized as a city in the Washington Territory. That same year, town founder AT Greene built Douglas County's first courthouse in Waterville and sold it to the reorganized county for a dollar. No trace of Okanogan remained, but Douglas has survived as an unrecognized hamlet.

Washington soon became the 42nd state in the United States, so the city of Waterville was recognized again by state law on May 3, 1890. By 1892, the city boasted several hundred residents and a number of traders who supplied it and the rural population living in the area.

The early dreams of raising cattle on the high plateau vanished when the harsh winter of 1889/90 killed most of the cattle. After that, potatoes and wheat vied for supremacy as the main crop for making money. Eventually wheat growing prevailed and became the mainstay of the local economy. Blessed with fertile soils, lots of snow in winter and rain in spring, with dry summers and high market demand, the local wheat farmers flourished in the early years and the town of Waterville grew and flourished with them.

A fire wiped out many of the early wooden buildings and businesses in Waterville. The commercial street was moved a block as new buildings shot up, this time made of fire-resistant masonry. The buildings in this district have become a bustling and rapidly developing economic hub for the entire region.

Today, Waterville's centenary business district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places , which also includes the nearby Waterville Hotel, the Nifty Theater, and other buildings from the same era.

In 1905, a stone courthouse ( Douglas County Courthouse ), which is still in use and listed on the State Historic Register , replaced the original wooden structure from 1889.

The Mansfield branch of the Great Northern Railway ran through the wheat fields of the Waterville Plateau from 1909 to 1985.
