Karl Novak

Karl Novak (born March 18, 1942 in Vienna ; † May 14, 2020 there ) was a contemporary Austrian sculptor .

life and work

Novak initially practiced the learned profession as a mechanic . In addition, he autodidactically acquired all the basics of sculpture. In 1975 the first sculptures made of noble serpentine and wood were created. Worth mentioning are u. a. the purchase of a large natural stone fountain made of serpentine by the Danube power plant Ybbs-Persenbeug in 1996 and that of a large wooden sculpture made of maple wood by the Danube power plant Freudenau in 1999.

In 1997 Novak took over the management of the sculpture section of the professional association of visual artists in Austria , the regional association of Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland. He held this position until 2006. In addition, he took over the management of the archive and in this function the digitization of the master data of over 10,000 people. He has also been collecting biographical data from 20th century Austrian sculptors for decades.

From 2006 to 2016 Novak was President of the Professional Association of Austrian Visual Artists, Regional Association of Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland and from 2007 to 2015 President of the Central Association of the Professional Association of Austrian Visual Artists.

Awards

In 1993 Novak received the Theodor-Körner-Förderpreis , in 1998 and 1999 he reached the 2nd place twice in the competition for the construction of the roundabout sculpture in Mödling and for the construction of the Arnold Schönberg monument in Mödling, in 2002 his submission was for the memorial of the former synagogue Named the winning work in Mödling and carried out by him. In 2018 he was awarded the Gold Medal of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria .
