Athletic career

Until 1949, Karl Oehler played football in his Thuringian hometown of Ronneburg, most recently with the Ronneburg sports club in the second-class district class of East Thuringia. At the beginning of the 1949/50 season he moved to the company sports community (BSG) Carl Zeiss Jena in the Thuringia state class, which had become the second division after the introduction of the DS league (later GDR league). With the BSG, Oehler rose to the newly formed second-rate GDR league at the end of the season . In the 1950/51 season, in the course of which the BSG was renamed "Mechanics", Oehler played all 18 point games as a defender and scored three goals. In the 1951/52 season, the Jena team appeared as "BSG Motor" and made it into the GDR league. Oehler was involved in this success with 21 of 22 point games. In 1952/53 Jena could only hold its own in the league for one season. Oehler had been appointed team captain and had played all 32 league games. In June 1953 he was appointed to the B national team and played in the international match Bulgaria - GDR (2-1) as a right defender. In the following three seasons in the GDR league, Oehler remained a regular for the Jenaer and only missed a point game in the 1954/55 season, in which the BSG was transferred to the newly founded Motor Club. From 1956 on, the GDR played every calendar year, and the Jenaers were promoted to the league for the second time. In addition to his 26 point games, Oehler also contributed three goals to the success. This time the SC motor was able to establish itself permanently in the first class. Oehler still played three seasons there. While in 1957 he was able to play all 26 point games and with four goals experienced the season with the highest scoring of his career between 1950 and 1959, he only made eleven league games in 1958, and in 1959 there were only four league games. Then he ended his career as a football player at the age of 36. Since 1950 he has been able to look back on 189 championship games in the Oberliga (73) and GDR League with a total of twelve goals. He stayed with SC Motor and later with FC Carl Zeiss as a junior coach, and in 1996 he was made an honorary member of FC Carl Zeiss Jena.
