Johann Heinrich Karl Piderit (born December 3, 1797 in Blomberg ; † September 22, 1876 in Detmold ) was a German physician and founder of the State Hospital in Detmold.

Live and act

Karl Piderit was born in Blomberg on December 3, 1797, the son of the Princely Lippe Council and Mayor Wilhelm Konrad Piderit. His older brother Wilhelm Carl Piderit (1782–1868) became President of the Supreme Court. His father sent him to the boarding school in Lemgo, which he finished on October 18, 1816 with the receipt of the school leaving certificate . This was followed by studies at the University of Jena . Here Piderit made the acquaintance of Goethe and Karl Ludwig Sand . He took part in the first Wartburg Festival in 1817 and became a member of the original fraternity . After a short stopover in Göttingen, he moved to Berlin, where he received his doctorate in medicine in 1820 . Back in Lippe, he settled in Detmold in 1822.

At the age of 30, Karl Piderit became court physician and medical advisor to the state government, two years later the Princely Lippian personal physician and councilor (from 1848: Privy Councilor). At the request of the Princely Chamber, he went to Bad Meinberg in 1834 , which he helped to flourish in the following years. In 1848 he resigned his position as head doctor in the fountain in order to devote himself fully to his most important work, the construction of the state hospital in Detmold.

He had recognized early on that medical care in the city was unsatisfactory, but completely inadequate in the country. Through persistent perseverance, he succeeded in wresting an annual subsidy for the city hospital from the state parliament. Because the premises there proved to be inadequate, Piderit collected donations and funds for the construction of the state hospital. The foundation stone was laid in 1860, and the building, the forerunner of today's Lippe Clinic , was ready for occupation two years later . Karl Piderit managed the hospital until his death.

Other activities

Karl Piderit was one of 40 men who came together on June 17, 1835 to decide to create a natural history collection. At Piderit's suggestion, the Natural Science Association for the Principality of Lippe emerged from this group , and he became its first director.
