Karl Foam
Ferdinand Karl Franz Schaum (born July 14, 1870 in Frankfurt am Main , † January 30, 1947 in Gießen ) was a German physical chemist.
Life
Schaum studied in Basel, Berlin, Leipzig and Marburg and received his doctorate in 1893 under Theodor Zincke at the University of Marburg . He then worked there as an assistant at the Chemical Institute. From 1894 to 1895 he studied physical chemistry with Wilhelm Ostwald at the University of Leipzig . He then qualified as a professor in Marburg in 1897 in physical chemistry on the subject of the types of isomerism - a critical study and in 1903 in experimental physics . From 1901 he worked as an assistant at the Marburg Physics Institute. From 1904 he worked as an associate professor for physical chemistry in Marburg. In 1908 he received a call to Leipzig, where he received an extraordinary professorship for photochemistry and scientific photography . In 1914 he became director of the Physico-Chemical Institute and professor for physical, theoretical and inorganic chemistry in Giessen. In 1935 he retired . Foam published numerous books and was co-editor of the concise dictionary of natural sciences , as well as together with Eugen Englisch , the journal for scientific photography, photophysics and photochemistry .
He was a member of the Marburg Society for the Advancement of All Natural Sciences. In Marburg he became a member of the Alemannia fraternity in 1889 .
