Karl Schellander (born August 9, 1956 in Klagenfurt , Carinthia , Austria ) is an Austro-German veterinarian and professor emeritus for animal breeding and husbandry at the University of Bonn.

Live and act

Karl Schellander was born on August 9, 1956 in Klagenfurt. After graduating from high school, he studied veterinary medicine at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna (VUW) from 1976 , graduated in 1981 with a diploma in veterinary medicine and obtained a doctorate in medicine. med. vet. This was followed by a job as an assistant veterinarian in a Swiss mixed practice. From 1983 he worked as a university assistant at the Institute for Animal Breeding and Genetics at the VUW. From 1985 to 1987 he was a scholarship holder of the Max Kade Foundation in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of Georgia (USA). He then returned to Vienna, where he completed his habilitation in 1991 in the field of “Molecular Genetics in Animal Breeding” and became an assistant professor at his institute.

In 1996 he was appointed full professor for animal breeding and husbandry and director of the Institute for Animal Sciences at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn . Here, through pioneering molecular genetic methods and approaches, he achieved remarkable results for the recognition of DNA markers and genes for important feature complexes in pigs (e.g. stress resistance, carcass and meat quality).

He successfully continued the research he had previously carried out on the model animal mouse in pre-implant genetics and embryo technology in cattle.

Appreciation

Schellander has always seen his expertise in molecular genetic and reproductive technology approaches to improve important characteristics in pigs and cattle with a view to their importance for practical animal breeding and evaluated them in discussions with practitioners. The impressive and highly valued commitment makes him an outstanding and leading representative of German animal breeding science , said Klaus Wimmers in his laudation for Schellander. According to Wmmers, his research results and his work have had a lasting impact on livestock research and set important impulses for practical implementation. Schellander retired on December 31, 2019.
