Karl Schmiedbauer

Karl Schmiedbauer (born August 19, 1922 in Vienna ; † June 4, 2009 there ) was an Austrian politician .

Life

Karl Schmiedbauer grew up in a Viennese working-class family and, after attending compulsory schools, learned his father's trade as a hairdresser . In 1941 Schmiedbauer was drafted into the Wehrmacht as a soldier . After the defeat, he was taken prisoner by the Soviets , where he lived from 1945 to 1948. After returning to Vienna, he worked as a hairdresser again for a short time before he found a job in the Leopoldau gas works in 1955 . He passed his Matura via the second educational path , so that in the early 1960s he was promoted to head of a department within the Wiener Gaswerke.

From the beginning of the 1950s Schmidbauer was involved in the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) and in 1964 was elected as a member of his party in the district representation of the 9th district of Alsergrund in Vienna . From January to May 1969 Schmiedbauer served briefly as deputy district mayor. In 1969, when the SPÖ succeeded in becoming the party with the highest number of votes before the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) in Alsergrund after ten years , Schmidbauer was elected district chairman. Schmidbauer succeeded in modernizing Alsergrund in the years to come. Conversion work at the Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof and at the Vienna University of Economics and Business was just as much a part of his work as the construction of the General Hospital .

Nevertheless, the ÖVP managed to recapture the post of district chairman in 1978 with its top candidate Wolfgang Schmied . Schmiedbauer was nevertheless Schmied's deputy district chairman, an office that Schmiedbauer held until 1984.

In addition to his political work, Karl Schmiedbauer was also active in numerous committees, including in the Austrian-Soviet Society . He was also president of the Alsergrund cultural association, was vice-president of the district museum and sat on the board of trustees of the Wiener Festwochen .
