Karl Schnorr von Carolsfeld

Karl Schnorr von Carolsfeld (born 1830; died 1895) was a German railway engineer and general director of the Royal Bavarian State Railways .

Life

Karl Schnorr von Carolsfeld was a son of the well-known painter Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld . After graduating from high school, he first attended the Technische Bildungsanstalt in Dresden and completed his training as an engineer at the Polytechnic School founded in Munich in 1833 , a forerunner to the Technical University of Munich founded in 1868 .

In 1851 he entered the service of the Bavarian State Railways, his first professional station was Würzburg , where he was involved in the construction of the Ludwigs-Westbahn . In 1856 he went on a long study trip to expand his professional knowledge, after which he worked for a short time in Prague for the Austro-Hungarian State Railway Company (StEG). In 1858 he resumed his service in Bavaria, initially working as a site manager for the section from Rosenheim to Salzburg on the Bavarian Maximiliansbahn . In 1860 he was appointed chairman of the Munich train station . In the years that followed, Schnorr von Carolsfeld took on a wide variety of tasks for the Bavarian State Railways, including managing the construction of the Munich – Simbach railway line , the construction of the Königswart bridge over the Inn and the reconstruction of Munich's main train station.

After various promotions, including being in the General Directorate of the State Railways, Chairman of the Construction Department, Schnorr von Carolsfeld was finally appointed General Director of the Royal Bavarian State Railways in 1886 . In this role he particularly promoted the construction of local railways and took care of the administrative organization of the state railways. Schnorr von Carolsfeld remained at the head of the Bavarian Railways until his death in 1895, the route network of which was expanded by around 700 kilometers during his tenure.

His son was the later general director of the Bavarian State Library , Hans Schnorr von Carolsfeld .
