Karl Seidel (diplomat)

Karl Seidel (* 1930 in Zwönitz ) is a former GDR ambassador and employee of the GDR Ministry for Foreign Affairs . Seidel was involved in negotiating the basic contract .

Life

Seidel grew up in Zwönitz. After the war, between 1945 and 1948, he learned the trade of carpenter . In 1950 he completed his Abitur at the Chemnitz preparatory college . From 1953 to 1956 he studied foreign policy at the German Academy for Political Science and Law in Potsdam-Babelsberg . He graduated from there with a degree in state science. From 1956 to 1990, Seidel worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the GDR (MfAA).

Seidel was an embassy counselor in Moscow between 1966 and 1969 , where he also headed the political department of the GDR embassy. Between 1970 and 1990 he was head of the FRG department in the GDR Foreign Ministry. He was a member of the delegation that negotiated the German-German basic agreement, and there he was the "second man" behind chief negotiator Michael Kohl . He was appointed ambassador to negotiate the basic treaty.

After the fall of the Wall he wrote the book Berlin-Bonner Balance about his experiences in the GDR Foreign Ministry and in 2006 an extensive second volume with memories of German-German relations .

Karl Seidel is married and now lives in Berlin.
