Karl Theodor Gier (born November 9, 1796 in Mühlhausen , Province of Saxony , † November 10, 1856 ibid) was a German lawyer and politician.

Life

Gier studied medicine and law in Jena and took part in the wars of liberation as an original fraternity (member since 1817) . In 1815 he served as a volunteer hunter . In 1821 he was appointed as the youngest member of the municipal authorities of the city of Mühlhausen and, at the age of 33, was elected mayor in 1829.

He was a consistent advocate of bourgeois-liberal ideas and in 1847 initially belonged to the United State Parliament and as a member of the Casino parliamentary group from March 17 to April 25, 1849 for the 21st constituency of the province of Saxony (Mühlhausen) in the Frankfurt National Assembly . For this reason he was deposed as mayor in 1849 by decree of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV . Although Gier was reinstated in this office in 1850, the king refused to allow him to be re-elected in 1856. The politically sidelined greed died that same year.

Honors

In Mühlhausen a street was named after him Gierstraße and in 1996 his tomb in the old cemetery was erected in front of the Marienkirche there.
