Karl Tofer

Karl Tofer (* August 11 . Jul / 23. August  1885 greg. In Sindi , Livonia , † 31 December 1942 in the prison camp of Solikamsk , Soviet Union ) was an Estonian diplomat. From 1936 to 1939 he was the envoy of the Republic of Estonia in Berlin .

Early years

Karl Tofer passed his Abitur at the grammar school in Pärnu . In 1905/06 he studied chemistry and mechanical engineering at the Polytechnic in Riga, Livonia . Then he worked in the family business "Tofers Kaufhaus" ( Estonian Toferi Kaubamaja ) in Russia .

Diplomatic career

With the proclamation of Estonia's state independence, Tofer entered his country's diplomatic service in 1920. In 1920/21 he worked at the Estonian embassy in Riga before becoming consul in Berlin in 1921 . In 1923 Karl Tofer became Deputy Foreign Minister (Estonian välisministri abi ) of the Republic of Estonia. From 1927 to 1931 Tofer was the first Estonian envoy in Rome , where he was accredited for Italy and Hungary at the same time . From 1930 to 1932 he was the Estonian envoy in Warsaw before he was again deputy foreign minister. In 1933 Tofer was appointed envoy in Moscow . On August 1, 1936, he succeeded Friedrich Karl Akel as the Estonian envoy in Berlin . In 1939 he handed over the management of the embassy to Rudolf Möllerson . In 1939/40 Tofer was again Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of Estonia.

With the Soviet occupation of Estonia in the summer of 1940, Tofer was officially dismissed from the Estonian Foreign Service on July 5, 1940 by the Stalinist occupation authorities. He was arrested the following year and died a few months later in a prison camp in what was then the Molotov Oblast (now the Perm region , Russia ).

Private life

Karl Tofer was married to Helene Konstantinovskaja (1893–1966). The couple had the son Georg Tofer (1914–1986).
