Karl Walter Vervoort

Walter Vervoort (born June 22, 1899 in Essen-Rüttenscheid , † July 12, 1979 in Zell (Mosel) ) was a German Paraguay missionary from the community of the Oblates of the Immaculate Virgin Mary .

Life

He had to interrupt his visit to the Ordensgymnasium in St. Karl in the Netherlands in 1917 because of military service and imprisonment. On September 7, 1920 he came to the novitiate of the Maria Engelport monastery and on July 4, 1926 he was ordained a priest in Hünfeld. A year later he was sent to the Pilcomayo Mission, founded in 1925 . In 1932 he was appointed Apostolic Prefect of Pilcomayo. On July 15, 1950, Walter Vervoort was appointed Vicar Apostolic of Pilcomayo by the Pope at the suggestion of the Paraguayan bishops and missionaries and was consecrated bishop on September 10 by Juan José Aníbal Mena Porta in the Cathedral of Asuncion. He was titular bishop of Barica .

After he had to resign from office for health reasons, he had been the chaplain of the Sisters of Divine Providence in Waldbreitbach since 1963. Despite his poor health, he took part in the Second Vatican Council .

After he died in Zell, he was buried on July 16, 1979 in the Engelport monastery cemetery.

Honors

In 1956, Walter Vervoort was awarded the Nation's Great Cross of Merit by the State of Paraguay for his work especially for the Indians .
