Karl Georg Wenzel (born August 14, 1914 in Kerkrade ; † June 20, 1985 ) was a German soccer player who worked for the SV Police Lübeck , VfB Lübeck and Lübeck BV-Phönix in the Gauliga Nordmark and the first-class soccer Oberliga Nord was used.

Life

Wenzel, who grew up near Aachen , came to the Free and Hanseatic City of Lübeck in 1936 because of his military service and joined the SV police there. After just a few months, he was used for the first time in a friendly game for Lübeck and should develop into an accurate center forward in the coming years: he finished the Gauliga seasons 1938/39, 1939/40 and 1941/42 as the main goal scorer of his team and was appointed to the Nordmark selection due to his achievements. During the Second World War he was transferred to various locations and at times also played as a guest player for Rapid Vienna , but returned to northern Germany immediately after the end of the war.

In 1945 he was involved in the founding of VfB Lübeck , which emerged as the successor to BSV Vorwärts Lübeck and SV Police Lübeck. With the Lübeckers, who were able to qualify for the new Oberliga Nord in 1947, he was the most successful goalscorer even after the war. The striker, who has meanwhile been promoted to team captain, scored 33 goals in the three first division seasons and moved to local rivals Phoenix Lübeck after relegation in 1950. For the LBV he completed three seasons in the second-rate amateur league Schleswig-Holstein and ended his playing career on June 17, 1953 on the Lohmühle with a 3-2 win against VfB.

After his time as an active footballer, Wenzel also worked as a coach for various clubs in the Lübeck area. The father of the future Bundesliga players Horst Wenzel and Rüdiger Wenzel died on June 20, 1985 at the age of 71.
