Karl von Berlepsch

Karl Graf von Berlepsch (* 1882 in Hannoversch Münden ; † May 24, 1955 at Berlepsch Castle ) was a German writer , poet and painter .

Life

Count Berlepsch passed the Abitur in 1906 at the Mündener Gymnasium . While still at high school, he received a prize for his ballad The Switchman . After high school he studied at the universities of Munich , Marburg and Bonn law . In 1911 he was employed by the state government in Kassel . He participated in the First World War as a soldier on the Eastern Front and the Western Front from 1914 to 1918. In 1919 he became a trainee lawyer in Kassel. After the death of his father, he took over the family property of Berlepsch Castle near Witzenhausen with the goods belonging to it.

From then on he lived at the castle and gathered well-known poets there in a loose series of literary circles . In addition to poetry, he also wrote short stories and sketches in prose . He was also a realistic painter and draftsman.

In 1936 the composer Arno Liebau set the poem “I want to drink your gold” to music. Even Karl Fuhrmann set to music some of his poems.
