Karl von Portele

Karl von Portele (born July 30, 1856 in Mährisch-Neustadt , † March 4, 1922 in Krems an der Donau ) was an Austrian oenologist .

Life

Karl Portele studied chemistry at the Vienna University of Technology and was an assistant there. During his studies in 1874 he became a member of the Libertas Vienna fraternity . In 1877 he entered the Agricultural School and Chemical Research Institute in San Michele all'Adige , where he was director from 1899 to 1902.

Appointed to the Ministry of Agriculture as a viticulture advisor in 1902, he was in close contact with the winemakers as their friend and advisor. The wine law of 1908 goes back to his use. Karl von Portele campaigned vehemently for securing the pesticides sulfur, vitriol and carbon disulfide for the preservation of viticulture in the First World War . By fighting downy mildew , he saved viticulture in Austria .

Portele published in-depth botanical studies on the development of grape berries and on the sex relationships of the vines. His merit was also the introduction of Bordeaux broth in Austria and the fight against the wine customs clause, which hindered exports.

After 42 years of service, he retired to Krems. He then became a traveling teacher who represented the interests of Austrian viticulture in lectures and in the press at home and abroad.

Karl Alfons von Portele was a son.
