Obituary in the official journal of the Mainz Railway Directorate

Karl Christian Friedrich Otto von Rabenau (born August 13, 1845 in Essen , † July 19, 1908 in Mainz ) was the second president of the Royal Prussian and Grand Ducal Hessian Railway Directorate in Mainz .

Personal

His parents were the Justizrat Karl Friedrich Hieronymus von Rabenau († before 1906 in Essen) and Ottilie Auguste Arnoldine, née Plöger († before 1906 in Berlin, died before her husband). Karl von Rabenau was Protestant . He took part in the Franco-German War in 1870/71. On June 28, 1884, he married Theodora Gehlen (born February 18, 1865 in Breslau ) in Berlin , with whom he had two sons:

  • Karl Walther von Rabenau (born October 28, 1885, † 1914 in Berlin)
  • Werner von Rabenau (born November 21, 1891, † July 24, 1918 in Fismes ( Champagne-Ardenne ))

Career

Von Rabenau was initially railway operations director in Berlin for 10 years, then a year as a member of the Kassel Railway Directorate . He was then a senior councilor in Cologne and Magdeburg for three years . From there he was provisionally appointed President of the Mainz Railway Directorate in April 1903 and then finally on May 1, 1903 . As president of the management he lived in the office building of the management, Kaiserstraße 3. He died “after a short, serious illness” in 1908 in office, in the Rochus Hospital in Mainz-Mombach . He had had to undergo an appendix operation, and it worked. However, peritonitis developed afterwards and he died of the consequences.

There were three funeral ceremonies on July 22, 1908, one private in the apartment, another in the boardroom of the railway management for invited guests, and one generally public in the cemetery. Undersecretary of State Flock represented the Minister for Public Works (Railway Minister of Prussia ), Privy State Councilor Gustav Krug von Nidda and others represented the government of the Grand Duchy of Hesse . In order to attend the funeral, all railway workers in the administrative district - as far as available - were given vacation and free travel. This also meant that several thousand people attended the funeral.
