Karlheinz Kelch
Karlheinz Kelch (born September 12, 1923 in Berlin ) is a former German military doctor . He was major general and head of the medical service of the Ministry of the Interior of the GDR .
Life
Kelch graduated from the military medical academies in Berlin and Prague. During the Second World War he was a soldier in the Wehrmacht in Norway, France and on the Eastern Front. He was taken prisoner by the Soviets .
After returning to the Soviet occupation zone in 1949, he joined the German People's Police (VP) and the SED . He was one of the first VP students who completed their medical studies at the University of Leipzig in 1952 . He then went to the Barracked People's Police (KVP). From October 1956 to October 1957 he was in command of the Leipzig Feldscherschule with the rank of lieutenant colonel . From 1957 to 1958 he completed a higher academic course with Kurt Geiger at the Kirov Academy in Leningrad and was then deputy commander of the Military Medical Section at the University of Greifswald (MMS) in 1958 . In 1963 he took over the position of chief of the medical service of Military District III (Neubrandenburg) of the National People's Army (NVA) and was promoted to colonel.
From 1970 to 1988 he was head of the medical services administration of the Ministry of the Interior (successor to Fritz Schlabitz). First colonel of the VP, he was appointed major general in this capacity on June 26, 1975. On February 15, 1971 he was involved in founding the Society for Military Medicine of the GDR .
After the reunification in the GDR he worked as a board member of the Initiative Group for the Protection of Social Rights (ISOR). He lives in Berlin.
