A collection of trophies that the margraves of Baden captured in the Turkish wars is called Karlsruhe Turks ' Booty.

Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm (1655–1707), who became known as Türkenlouis , his uncle Hermann von Baden-Baden (1628–1691), but also members of the Durlach line of the House of Baden successfully fought against the Turks and captured valuable items. These were initially kept in Rastatt Castle and Karlsburg Castle in Durlach . In 1877, Grand Duke Friedrich I had the two holdings merged in his residence city of Karlsruhe in the building of today's State Museum of Natural History . The Turkish Booty has been part of the permanent exhibition of theBaden State Museum open to the public. Parts of the Turkish booty, namely oriental manuscripts , letters and associated letter bags made of precious textiles, are in the manuscript collection of the Baden State Library .

Art historical importance

From an art-historical point of view, the Turkish booty can be understood as a collection of Ottoman handicrafts. It is one of the most valuable collections of its kind in Europe. The Turkish loot includes Ottoman emblems such as flags and horse tails , armaments such as B. bracers, mail shirts and shields, riding gear such. B.
