Karol Šmidke
Karol Šmidke (born January 21, 1897 in Vítkovice near Ostrava , † December 15, 1952 in Bratislava ) was a Slovak politician, a functionary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia .
Šmidke was in 1944/1945 together with Vavro Šrobár vice chairman of the Slovak National Council (SNR - at that time in exile). He was chairman of this body from 1948 to 1950.
Šmidke played an important role in the time of the Slovak National Uprising . In 1950 he was accused of bourgeois nationalism and retired from political life.
