Karol Estreicher (the younger)

Karol Estreicher (also Karl Estreicher ; until 1918 Karl von Estreicher ; born March 4, 1906 in Krakow , Austria-Hungary ; † April 29, 1984 ibid) was a Polish art historian , professor at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and director of the University Museum in the Collegium Maius .

Life

He came from the Krakow branch of the Estreicher family . His parents were Stanisław Estreicher , who died in Sachsenhausen concentration camp in 1939 , and Helene nee. Longchamps de Bérier.

After studying art history at Kraków University , he received his doctorate in 1928. At the beginning of the Second World War , he fled to Great Britain via Romania with Polish cultural treasures. In cooperation with the Polish government in exile , he put together a group of eight to document the robbery of Polish cultural assets. After the Allied victory, he brought some of the deported to Germany artworks returned to Poland, including Leonardo da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine and Krakow Veit shock - high altar .

From 1945 to 1950 he taught at the Cracow Art School . After his habilitation in 1947, the Cracow University appointed him associate professor in 1950 and full professor in 1972. From 1951 to 1976 he was also director of the university museum in the Collegium Maius . In addition, he continued until 1951 the grandfather of the same name Karol d. Ä. started publishing the "Bibliografia Polska".

He was a member of the Polish PEN Club and opposed the incorporation of the Berlinka into the Jagiellonian Library .

On the 25th anniversary of his death on April 29, 2009, the Estreicher family museum was opened in his villa in Wola Justowska .
