Stanisław Estreicher

Stanisław Estreicher (also Stanislaus von Estreicher ; born November 26, 1869 in Krakow , Austria-Hungary , † December 28, 1939 in Sachsenhausen concentration camp ) was a Polish legal historian and bibliographer . As an outstanding politician and publicist, he was one of the conservatives in Krakow.

Life

Stanisław Estreicher, whose father Karl was raised to the nobility by the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1881 , came from the Krakow branch of the Estreicher family . From 1879 to 1887 he attended the Lyceum in Cracow. He then studied legal history and literary history at the universities of Krakow and Vienna until 1892 . In 1892 he received his doctorate in law . He then spent a year in Cracow with practical studies and 1893-1894 he studied at the University of Berlin . In 1895 he completed his habilitation with the legal history text Studya nad historyą kontraktu kupna w prawie niemieckim epoki frankońskiej (“History of German Contract Law in the Franconian Empire ”).

In 1902 he was appointed associate professor, in 1906 full professor at the University of Cracow, where he became a member of the Academic Council in 1914. He initially taught legal history of German law, from 1919 legal history of Western European law. In 1914 he was elected as a corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Learning (PAU), and in 1930 he became its full member.

In the academic years 1911, 1918 and 1926 he was dean of the law faculty and from 1919 to 1921 he held the office of rector of the university. In this position he founded the Conference of Polish University Rectors , of which he became chairman.

From 1887 he worked on Bibliografia Polska founded by his father Karol Estreicher , which he headed as editor from 1908 until his retirement in 1939.

On Monday, November 6, 1939, he was arrested by SS-Sturmbannführer Bruno Müller with over 100 professors as part of the Krakow special campaign and deported to Sachsenhausen concentration camp. There he fell ill under the inhumane conditions of his imprisonment and died on December 28, 1939.

Stanisław Estreicher was married to Helene Longchamps de Bérier.
