The Karolinenhöhe is 506 meters, the second highest elevation of the city of Salzburg located Mönchsberg . It was named after Karoline Augusta , the fourth wife and widow of Emperor Franz I , who is known in Salzburg as a patron in the social and cultural field (e.g. founding of the Carolino-Augusteum Museum ). From this vantage point one could look south to the residence , the residence of the imperial widow, and to the north-west to Bavaria, the country of origin of Karoline Augusta as the daughter of King Maximilian of Bavaria . Today this is no longer possible because of the high trees.

Tree-planted rondeau 1863

In 1863 the town beautification committee arranged for a rondeau planted with five trees to be built on the Karolinenhöhe near today's Grasmayr villa . In order to collect money for this, a soirée was held in the Mirabell Gardens and donations were asked for.

Mönchsberg Cross 1895

On the Karolinenhöhe, the so-called Mönchsberg Cross was erected in 1895 on the initiative of the parish priest of St. Blasius, Alois Kaltenhauser, with donations from the Salzburg population. During the church festival of Exaltation of the Cross on September 15, the cross was carried to the Mönchsberg by members of the Catholic Workers' Association and the Cross Brotherhood and erected here. The cross had a body made of cast iron and came from an industrial production. In the year of the First World War , processions to the Mönchsbergkreuz took place.

Katschthalerkreuz 1920

The peace initiative of Pope Benedict XV. in the summer of 1917 promoted the idea of erecting a new cross here. Taking up this idea, the sculptor Johannes Piger began work on this new cross. Although work on it was already completed in 1918, the cross was only erected after the war on Sunday, September 26, 1920 and consecrated by the parish priest of St. Blaise. The opinion that Archbishop Johannes Baptist Katschthaler , who had already died at that time, had something to do with the erection of the crucifix is erroneous; the popular name of the cross as "Katschthalerkreuz" goes back to the fact that it often rested on the Karolinenhöhe. (A participation of the art-loving Katschthaler († 1914) in the initiative to build the cross is likely.) The cross was renewed in 1996 by the restorer Ursula Mair and had to be restored again in 2014 because of damage allegedly caused by dormice. The restored cross was consecrated on May 10, 2014 by the Muellner pastor, Father Franz Lauterbacher (OSB).
