Kasper T. Toeplitz (* 1960 in Warsaw as Kasper Teodor Toeplitz ) is a French composer and electric bass player who, with his compositions and soundscapes, finds himself in the “no man's land between traditional ways of composing (for orchestras or ensembles, operas) and new electronic music or noise music has settled ”. He lives in Paris.

biography

Toeplitz comes from the Warsaw Intelligence family of the Toeplitz and is the son of the ballerina and choreographer Krystyna Mazurówna and the journalist Krzysztof Teodor Toeplitz and the great-nephew of the film scholar Jerzy Toeplitz . In 1969 he moved to France. He wrote his earlier works mainly for traditional instruments. Toeplitz names Giacinto Scelsi and Iannis Xenakis as influences . He has also written music for modern dance and theater music. One of his main interests is literature. He wrote his first opera J'irai vers le nord, j'irai dans la nuit polaire based on Sylvia Plath's texts, the opera revolves around Sylvia Plath's life. Great Expectations has been to Kathy Acker's written texts, ruin is based on texts by François Bon . For some time, Toeplitz has also been combining visuals with his musical work (for example, Capture for Computer Solo, together with Dominik Barbier = K_Apture ). He has also written pieces for his electric guitar orchestra, Sleaze Art, and runs his own label ROSA (Recordings of Sleaze Art) Records.

Bass computer

In 2003 Toeplitz presented the so-called BassComputer , a partially fretted electric bass with five fretted and four unbound strings (similar to the guitar harp ). The instrument is connected to a computer via an interface and the sound is manipulated using software from the field of real-time sound synthesis ( Max / MSP ). On request, the French composer Éliane Radigue (student of Pierre Henry and Pierre Schaeffer ) wrote the piece Elemental II for him in the same year , which he performed in 2004 and which was released on CD in 2005.

Collaborations

Kaspar T. Toeplitz has worked with research institutions such as GMEM , GRM , IRCAM and Radio France . There have been collaborations with many other musicians in the field of composed experimental music: Éliane Radigue, Zbigniew Karkowski , Dror Feiler , Tetsuo Furudate, Phill Niblock and Art Zoyd , Ulrich Krieger , Stevie Wishart and Z'ev . In 2007, together with Eryck Abecassis and Wilfried Wendling, he founded KERNEL, a computer ensemble that exclusively presents interpretations of long notated pieces and works on the basis of electronic music compositions (real-time synthesis, sound synthesis).

Scholarships and Awards

He has won various prizes and awards for his work: 1st prize for orchestral composition at the Besançon Festival, 1st prize in the Opéra Autrement / Acanthes competition . He was a scholarship holder of the Villa Médicis Hors-les-Murs in New York, Léonard de Vinci in San Francisco, Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto and the DAAD in Berlin.
