The Kasperl (always "Kaschperl" pronounced) on ORF eins is a traditional children's program on Austrian television. The puppet theater has been broadcast regularly by ORF since 1957 .

history

Back then, the children waited in front of the TV for the next question from the Kasperlpost and sent the answers to the show. ORF, password “Kasperlpost”, 1136 Vienna - that is the address to this day. In the 1970s and 1980s, the broadcast slot - every Wednesday afternoon - was shared by three different puppet stages.

The oldest puppet puppet theater on TV is called Kasperl & Pezi and has been broadcast on ORF since 1957. The Vienna Urania Puppet Theater - the founders were Hans and Marianne Kraus - provided the puppets. In 1961 Kasperl & Strolchi came on television and is thus the second oldest television puppet theater. Wolfgang Kindler's Viennese hand puppet theater was founded in 1958. Strolchi later even conjured up more than 100 bedtime treats with the famous child magician Bobby Lugano . After Wolfgang Kindler's death in 1985, his wife Hertha Kindler took over the management of the stage. The Arlequin Theater by Arminio and Christine Rothstein brought clown Habakuk's puppet circus to ORF in 1971 . Since 1984 there has also been Kasperl and Hopsi from Rudolf Watzinger's puppet stage Liliput and in 1989 Kasperl & Co from Stefan Gaugusch joined the ORF Kasperl programs.

Traude Kossatz produced 52 puppet productions with the puppet theater Lilarum between 1984 and 1996 (Kasperl and Quaxi and Kasperl and Moplpopl). Well-known puppet speakers were Karl Mittner , Andy Woerz , Markus Mitterhuber , Stefan Fleming and Michael Mohapp .

Up to the redesign of the Kasperl, the inserts (scene images) and live drawings were made by Winnie Jakob "Winnie / Win", whose trademark was the flower as "i". You only saw the hand that was drawing, but never the artist herself.

today

Robert Steiner has been moderating the Kasperl TV show on ORF for ten years . In 2008 the show was renamed Servus Kasperl . In September 2010 a new range of cloaks for traditional puppet pieces appeared: Punch and Judy now live with Robert Steiner and Christina Karnicnik in a “ Punch and Judy Villa” designed by Gottfried Kumpf , where he experiences new adventures every day. Servus Kasperl is broadcast every Saturday and Sunday at 7:30 a.m. on ORF Eins .

Use of language

In (Eastern) Austria and Southern Germany, “Punch and Judy Theater” disparagingly describes dubious, embarrassing, unprofessional, incompetent behavior in the collective. An individual who behaves in this way is often referred to as a "Kasperl".
