Winnie Jacob

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Winnie Jakob , full name Winifred Victoria Jakob , signed “WIN” or “WINNIE” (born May 17, 1927 in Reichenberg , Czechoslovakia , † December 26, 2012 in Vienna ), was a draftsman, caricaturist and publicist.

Life

Jacob's father was the manager and owner of one of the largest cloth factories, the mother came from a Viennese Christian-social politician and artist family. The Bohemian part of the family was expropriated and expelled in 1947 and came to Austria .

Winnie Jakob studied English with a diploma at the University of Graz as well as graphics at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Linz and then lived in Salzburg for ten years . There she was discovered in 1959 during a press conference by the culture editor of the Wiener Kurier while drawing by Karl Böhm , Leonard Bernstein , Herbert von Karajan and Dimitri Mitropoulos , moved to Vienna and worked as a cartoonist for newspapers in Austria (" Kurier ", " Wiener Zeitung ", " Salzburger Nachrichten ", " Neues Österreich "), as well as in Germany and Switzerland. She also illustrated and published books and presented her works in numerous international exhibitions. Winnie worked for decades at ORF in the children's program (" Kasperl ") (the oldest ongoing European children's program) and in Austrian films (e.g. Höllenangst xx). She was and is the only female cartoonist and publicist of her kind, which also made it possible for her to take part in Europalia . She also wrote short stories and reports. Her bibliography includes around 70 books. At a late age, she also elevated photography to an art form of her own. She was a member of the international artist group "Die Spirale", IG Bildende Kunst, artist guild. She was also connected to her Sudeten German Bohemian roots in the associations.

Numerous works by WIN are due to public purchases and a. in the Artothek des Bundes, Artothek Niederösterreich, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Carolino Augusteum Salzburg, Albertina Vienna, Art Office Berlin, cultural offices of the cities of Vienna, Salzburg, Villach, Austrian National Library, Salzburg Festival, museums of the city of Vienna (Artothek MUSA, city and state library, city and Landesarchiv), German State Archives Berlin, Kunstmuseum Basel, Kunsthaus Zürich, Austrian Film Archive, Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY USA, Salomon R. Guggenheim Museum NY USA, National Gallery of Art Washington DC USA, Museum of Modern Art Frankfurt, National Library of Congress Washington DC, u. v. a. m. She left the art estate, including all rights, to her only immediate relative and nephew Michel A. Jakob. He has taken on the task of preserving the works and safeguarding rights as well as broad access to the work by means of an archive.

bibliography

WINNIE had regular caricatures, cultural reviews, travel reports in daily newspapers in Austria, Germany and Switzerland in the late fifties up to around 2010, including Die Zeit, Die Welt, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Kölner Stadtanzeiger, Münchner Merkur, Zürcher Woche, FAZ, NZZ, Wiener Journal, Die Furche, Kurier, Die Krone, Wiener Zeitung, die Presse, Salzburger Nachrichten, OÖN, Neues Österreich, AZ but their bibliography is just as noteworthy, around 70 books in many world languages, even in Norwegian, contain drawings and sometimes also texts of her. Of course, mostly illustrations of culture (opera, theater, conductors, actors, celebrities), but politicians also dominate their work. She also ventured into socio-economic issues as well as sports. Furthermore, up to now around 30 citations in specialist literature on art history, opera and theater, “women in art” have been found.

The book “Dirigenten”, which has meanwhile become legendary and has become a “standard work”, was published by Forum Verlag in 1965. It congenially juxtaposes drawings by WINNIE with photos by Elfriede Hanak and texts by Alexander Witeschnik. A work that is also relevant for today's budding musicians and musicologists. Another book to be emphasized is certainly “Karajan con variazioni”, published in 1990 by Piper-Schott Verlag Musik series with a prologue by Hans Weigel . This book gives a brief overview and overview of WINNIE's work on cultural caricature.
