Caspian Economic Forum

The Caspian Economic Forum ( English : Caspian Economic Forum, in short : CEF ) was held for the first time in 2019 and serves the exchange and cooperation of the countries bordering the Caspian Sea.

The Caspian Economic Forum is primarily a discussion format for the countries bordering the Caspian Sea . The following five countries are neighboring countries and are therefore involved in the Caspian Economic Forum:

In addition to these directly participating states, several other states also sent observers to the first edition of the forum in Awaza , among others the Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissow visited the forum. In addition to state actors, numerous companies and various organizations, in particular from the fields of business and the environment, were represented at this first edition of the event.

The Aktau Convention , which the countries bordering the Caspian Sea signed in August 2018 in Aqtau , Kazakhstan , regulated the legal status of the Caspian Sea, thereby resolving a point of dispute between the five bordering countries. This agreement paved the way for increased cooperation between the five states, which was particularly evident in the planning and implementation of the Caspian Economic Forum.

The forum primarily serves to promote cooperation between the participating states and is intended to be a permanent platform for multilateral talks. The cooperation is to extend in particular to the areas of transport, trade, industry, the environment and tourism. According to a press release on the occasion of the announcement of the first Caspian Economic Forum, the long-term goal is to develop the Caspian region into a major transport and transit center that is able to meet modern and global requirements. In addition, the forum and the results achieved there should help to make the region more attractive for investors.

Events

The so far only event of the Caspian Economic Forum took place on August 12, 2019 in the Turkmen tourism zone of Awaza . The Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow acted as host, the Russian delegation was led by Prime Minister Dmitri Anatolyevich Medvedev . Iran was represented by Vice-President Eshagh Dschahangiri , Azerbaijan by Prime Minister Novruz Məmmədov , while Prime Minister Asqar Mamin led the Kazakh delegation.

A total of 57 international treaties were signed during the forum, including an agreement on trade and economic cooperation. Topics at the forum included the development of tourism in the Caspian region, the protection of the Caspian Sea ecosystem , the development of the region's potential in the areas of industry and transport, cooperation in the field of the digital economy and the implementation of joint investment programs.

The next Caspian Economic Forum will take place in Astrakhan , Russia in 2020 .
