But he also painted other animals and plants.

Life

Jacques Barraband's date of birth is unknown. Documented are the date and place of baptism, August 17, 1768 in the Sainte-Croix church in Aubusson, and the names of his parents, Jacques Barraband and Marie-Anne Bebit. Barraband's father worked in the local tapestry factory . The younger Jacques Barraband himself worked in this factory for a short time after finishing his art studies at the local school. Even after moving to Paris, Barraband initially remained loyal to carpets and worked in tapestry and rugs shops on Rue de la Huchette - de Landriève, Rogier, Sallandrouze and Dessartaux. This enabled Barraband to study art with Joseph-Laurent Malaine at the l'Académie royale de peinture . At the first exposure of the produits de l'industrie française (in German: exhibition of products of French industry ) in 1798, Barraband was able to publicly demonstrate his skills for the first time, which earned him his first commissions as an artist. Barraband made some paintings for the carpet manufacturers Gobelin and Savonnerie and the porcelain manufacturer Dihl and Gerhard . After Barraband had first made pictures of insects for the French naturalist Sonnini and illustrations for a book Fourniers about Egypt , Napoleon Bonaparte personally commissioned Barraband with pictures of birds and flowers, which he made between 1801 and 1804. Other clients, for whom Barraband made illustrations, were Sèvres, François Levaillant and François-Marie Daudin . One of Barraband's pupils was Pauline Rifer de Courcelles . In 1805 he introduced her to the artist Joseph August Knip , whom she married soon after. Pauline Rifer de Courcelles illustrated the birds in Anselme-Gaetan Desmarest ’s book Histoire Naturelle de Tangaras, des Manakins et des Todiers . Napoleon hired Barraband to decorate the banquet hall of Saint-Cloud Castle . In 1807 Barraband was appointed professor at the School of Arts et Dessin de Lyon. In 1809 Barraband died at the age of 41, presumably of an overexertion-related illness in Lyon. His students erected a memorial to him in the Lyon cemetery. He left behind a daughter named Adeline Barraband who became a musician.

Jacques Barraband was a versatile illustrator and painter, but his focus was on zoological and botanical studies and illustration, where he had primarily specialized in birds. Since Barraband could never observe the tropical birds in their natural habitat, he had to rely on stuffed specimens for his work . The collaboration with François Levaillant deserves special mention, for whose works on birds Barraband contributed the illustrations. Levaillant's work includes specific studies of (first the Latin taxonomy in brackets, then the name of the study in French in italics) parrots (Psittaciformes; perroquets ), birds of paradise (Paradisaeidae; oiseaux de paradis ), rockets (Coraciidae; rolliers ), toucans (Ramphastidae) ; toucans ), bearded birds (according to modern taxonomy, these are no longer seen as a family and are divided into the Asian bearded birds (Megalaimidae), the American bearded birds (Capitonidae), the African bearded birds (Lybiidae) and the toucan bearded birds (Semnornithidae) on; barbus ), protea birds (Promeropidae; promerops ), bee-eaters (Meropidae; guêpiers ), trogons (Trogonidae; couroucous ) and turacos (Musophagidae; touracos ). The collaborations between Levaillant and Barraband were published in:

  • Histoire naturelle des perroquets
  • Histoire naturelle des oiseaux de paradis et des rolliers, suivie de celles des toucans et des barbus
  • Histoire naturelle des promérops et des guêpiers (et des couroucous et touracos, faisant suite à celle des oiseaux de paradis)

Barraband's career as a painter and draftsman, however, began with his illustrations of insects for Sonnini's studies. In addition to birds and insects, Barraband also drew amphibians. Barraband made studies of birds and flowers for the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte - the artist also painted corresponding still lifes.
