Kassel romantic house

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kassel Romantic House was a meeting place for early romanticism in Kassel (Hesse). In the history of literature, this early romantic meeting place is considered to be the first place where romantics came together .

history

In 1799, the early classicist romantic house in Kassel was built by Simon Louis du Ry for his brother-in-law, a councilor at the Hessian Higher Appeal Court. The building and the Fürstengarten belonging to the complex (today part of the Kassel vineyard ) were the meeting point of the Kassel Romantic Circle around the Brothers Grimm, who often met at the time of Jérôme Bonaparte.

The building then became the property of the Frankfurt am Main banker Karl Jordis. The banker financed the Kingdom of Westphalia Jérôme Bonapartes through risky speculation and bond trading. He was married to Ludovica Brentano , daughter of a well-known Frankfurt family of Italian origin. She was the sister of Bettina Brentano , who wrote a standard work of the 19th century based on her memories of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

Her brother Clemens Brentano announced the second volume of Des Knaben Wunderhorn in the Kassel Romantikerhaus . This collection of old folk songs and poems by Clemens Brentano and Achim von Arnim ushered in the literary epoch of Romanticism.

The Brothers Grimm received important suggestions for their fairy tale collections in the Kassel Romantic House.

The romantic circle

In addition to the Brothers Grimm, the Kassel Romantic Circle included the founder of art history Herman Grimm , the master builder Johann Christian Ruhl , the Kassel sculptor Johann Werner Henschel , and the writer Ernst von der Malsburg . People often commuted to Schönfeld Castle , which was also owned by the banker Jordis, to gather there. In 1808 Schönfeld Castle was sold to Jérôme and shortly afterwards Karl Jordis sold his building at what is now the Brothers Grimm Platz.

In 1910 the building gave way to the new Hessian State Museum in Kassel.
