Kastanienallee in Eschelbronn

The Kastanienallee in Eschelbronn , a municipality in the Rhein-Neckar district in northern Baden-Württemberg is a series of 19 as a natural monument designated horse chestnut trees (reserve number 82260200001). The avenue is opposite the train station on Bahnhofstrasse on the banks of the Schwarzbach and is around 310 meters long.

history

The trees were listed as a historical monument in 1981

It is estimated that the youngest trees on Kastanienallee were planted around 1875 or earlier; possibly in the course of the construction of the railway station on the opposite Meckesheim – Neckarelz and the construction of the Meckesheimer Straße . The younger ones, probably planted afterwards, are located at the northwest end of the avenue inwards.

During the Second World War , several trees in Kastanienallee were damaged in a bomb attack carried out by the Allies on March 13, 1945 on the adjacent train station.

Twelve trees were owned by the Mosbach Road Construction Office , 13 belonged to the Deutsche Bundesbahn . In the late 1960s, the Mosbach road construction authority systematically started felling chestnuts belonging to it for reasons of traffic law. With reference to road blockades caused by fallen branches after storms in February 1967 and the health of the chestnuts, two trees on Kastanienallee were felled in 1973. Further felling should follow, but was prevented by the municipality of Eschelbronn under the then mayor Dieter Janitza.

On May 7, 1981, the trees were placed under protection as a natural monument.

Some of the last trees in the direction of the exit from the village were felled on May 14, 2008 by order of the nature conservation authority of the Rhein-Neckar district because they endangered passers-by and traffic.

maintenance

The chestnuts are regularly attacked by horse chestnut leaf miners. To counteract their proliferation, pheromone traps are set up every year . The local association of the Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation , together with volunteers, removes the leaves that have fallen in autumn.

On December 11, 2015, an expert opinion on the care of the trees was drawn up. On March 15, 2016, the municipal council unanimously decided to commission the Eschelbronn-based company Fabian Himmelhan to implement the recommended measures, which had submitted a corresponding offer for 11,022.38 euros on March 7, 2016.
