Box trap (rocker board trap) made of wire

A box trap is an elongated box made of wood or wire for catching small animals up to about cat size , e.g. B. for predatory game such as martens , polecats , weasels and foxes . The trap catches the game alive and unharmed.

functionality

Traps with one or two entrances ( pass-through trap ) on the narrow sides are common. The entrances are locked by doors when caught. Different constructions are available for this, e.g. B. from a positioning board located on the ground, which releases a positioning tongue when moving, whereby retaining pins release the trap doors, which close the openings of the trap and are held in this position by bolts ( rocker board trap ). A box trap has a height and width of around 30 cm and a length of around 100 cm. The trap is camouflaged ( "blinded" in the hunter's language ). It is used with or without bait .

Box traps are often set up on compulsory passes . Dry trenches, watercourse crossings, hedges and forest edges or culverts are suitable as fishing grounds.

Box traps for fox, badger, raccoon and raccoon are larger than those for polecat, martens and ermine. They are available in different materials such as B. wood, metal or plastic.

Legal Aspects

Although everyone is allowed to purchase a box trap without restriction, its use is partly regulated by laws and regulations ( hunting laws , animal welfare laws , trapping regulations, etc.). So in some federal states, z. B. Hessen, requires an additional qualification to the hunting license .

Animal welfare issues

Box traps should be made of opaque material in order to spare the captured animal stress (up to death) due to lack of cover. The trap must be big enough to give the animal enough space to rest. The trap must be built in such a way that there is no risk of injury. Traps caught alive should be checked regularly. This means that you have to check twice a day.

Trivia

Box traps (like other traps) with reporting devices, e.g. B. be equipped via the GSM network.
