Katalymata ( Greek Καταλύματα ( n. Pl. ), 'Accommodation') is the name of an archaeological excavation site 900 meters northeast of the village of Monastiraki ( Μοναστηράκι ) in the east of the Greek island of Crete . Monastiraki belongs to the village of Pachia Ammos in the municipality of Ierapetra . Katalymata is located on the north side above the western exit of the Cha Gorge ( Φαράγγι του Χά Farangi tou Cha ) in the Thrypti Mountains ( Όρος Θρυπτή Oros Thrypti ) and is difficult to access. Nearby other archaeological sites are Chalasmenos ( Χαλασμένος ) 350 meters southwest and Vassiliki ( Βασιλική ) 2.5 kilometers in the west.

Katalymata was first mentioned by Harriet Boyd-Hawes in the early 20th century . But it was not until 1993 that excavations were carried out by Krzysztof Nowicki with the participation of Metaxia Tsipopoulou and William Coulson in connection with the excavations in the Late Minoan - Early Iron Age settlement of Chalasmenos. Finds from six different periods of time were discovered on the natural mountain terrace at the northwest end of the Cha Gorge, which Krzysztof Nowicki describes as a "refuge". The focus of the excavation was an object named “Building C”, which was described in detail (space, area and context). The listed finds from Katalymata date from the end of the Neolithic Age (also Copper Age , around 3500 BC), from the Middle Minoan Old Palace period (MM II, around 1700 BC), the Late Minoan sections SM IB to SM III A1 (around 1450 to 1400 BC) and SM III C (about 1200 to 1150 BC), the early Byzantine period (late 7th century) and the late Venetian period (16th to 17th centuries).
