The Sulmona diocese was established in the 6th century . On June 27, 1818, the territory of the diocese Valva was annexed to the diocese Sulmona. The diocese Valva and Sulmona was on August 15, 1972 by Pope Paul VI. subordinated to the Archdiocese of L'Aquila as a suffragan with the Apostolic Constitution Cum cognitum . On September 30, 1986, the diocese of Valva and Sulmona was renamed the Diocese of Sulmona-Valva .
