Pachia Ammos ( Greek Παχεία Άμμος [ paˈçʲa ˈamɔs ] ( f. Sg. )) Is a village and a local community of the municipality of Ierapetra in the east of the Greek island of Crete . The main town has 574 inhabitants.

Settlements

The villages still belong to the local community of Pachia Ammos

  • Vasiliki (Βασιλική), 72 inhabitants
  • Monastiraki (Μοναστηράκι), 16 E.
  • Xirokambos (Ξηρόκαμπος), 184 E.

location

The place is located at the narrowest point of the island between the villages of Amoudara and Kavousi about 20 km east of Agios Nikolaos , directly on the Gulf of Mirabello . After Ierapetra on the south side of Crete it is about 17 km. To the island of Psira it is 6 km to the northeast by ship, the uninhabited small island of Konida with only approx. 5000 m² is less than a kilometer from the beach of Pachia Ammos. It is believed that the place was an important port in ancient times. Goods were transported via the isthmus to and from Ierapetra, Crete's gateway to North Africa, and the dangerous sea route around the east coast was saved. Ancient Minoa is also located near Pachia Ammos.

Name and economy

Pachia Ammos fishing port

The name means 'thick sand' and refers to the beach. The main source of income for the residents is tourism. Only a few are still fishing and farming. Parts of the film Tsatsiki - Squids and First Kisses (1999) were shot in Pachia Ammos . The place has a small port in the east with an entrance from the west.

Archaeological digs

On April 15, 1903 and from June 4 to 6 of the same year, the archaeologist Harriet Ann Boyd carried out test excavations in Pachia Ammos and discovered the cellar of a 42.4 meter long building 200 meters from the coast at sta Hellenika . This building was probably a Greco-Roman traders' warehouse. In the immediate vicinity she found two cisterns and an aqueduct . Harriet Boyd reported that a Turkish farmer discovered part of a marble seat while plowing nearby.

During thunderstorms in October 1913, the masses of water from the mountains flushed a 20 meter wide and one meter deep ditch at Pachia Ammos and Minoan jugs appeared. As soon as the weather allowed, archaeological excavations were carried out here from April 8 to May 9, 1914, and in January 1915 the archaeologist Richard Berry Seager uncovered a 40 m by 150 m cemetery within two weeks, 20 meters from the sea. The cemetery was used from the Early Minoan to the Late Monoan Period (SM I). Seager found 213 jar burials, with a large jug - usually a storage jar - placed over the corpse in a squatting position . As a rule, an obsolete vessel was used, but there also seem to have been vessels that were made especially for burial. Furthermore, six burials were found in Larnaken , whereby a rare specimen from the early Minoan period came to light.

The painting on the vessels was surprisingly good in the damp soil and better preserved than in dry soil. Most vessels were (with drip patterns Engl. Pattern drip or trickle style ) decorated. The paint was allowed to run down the outside of the vessel.

  • The Minoan archaeological site of Gournia is located in the immediate vicinity of the town in the west .
  • The entrance to the Cha Gorge can be found about one kilometer south at Monastiraki .
  • To the southwest of the Cha Gorge are the Minoan ruins of Halasmenos .
  • In the northern rock face of the Cha Gorge is Katalymata , a Minoan refuge.
