Kate Josephine Bateman (pron. Behtmän) (born October 7, 1842 in Baltimore , Maryland , † April 8, 1917 in London ) was an American actress .

Life

She first appeared in the performances of the Bateman Children organized by her father and appeared on stage in Louisville in 1846. This kind of theatrical activity lasted until 1854, when she left the stage in San Francisco in order to prepare for a real acting career.

It opened in New York in March 1860. After she had played with applause in the most important theaters in her home country, she accepted an engagement at the Adelphitheater in London in 1863, where she played Deborah von Mosenthal, who had been converted into Leah, with the greatest success on 210 evenings.

Her main roles also include: Evangeline (based on Longfellow), Geraldine (in a play by her mother), Julia in the "Buckligen", Pauline in the "Mädchen von Lyon" and Shakespeare's Julia and Lady Macbeth. Returning to America in 1865, she married a brother of the American historian Eyre Crowe in October 1866 and stayed away from the stage for two years. Then she appeared again in America and England, lately less mentioned than before.
