Catechism Church (Kamenz)

Catechism church in Kamenz, left the choir of the main church St. Marien

The Catechism Church is one of the four Protestant churches in Kamenz . Among other things, it served the Sorbian-speaking church service and the catechism exams. Their defiant appearance gives the impression of a fortified church .

history

In March 1358, documents from the city council and the Lords of Kamenz mentioned a foundation that Kunne , Heinrich Kost's widow, had instructed in favor of a chapel outside the main church of St. Mary and the maintenance of a chaplain . In this regard, the explicit consent of the municipality, the pastor, the abbess of St. Marienstern and the Meißner bishop is mentioned. At that point in time the chapel is said to have been built. In 1362 further donations were made to the church.

The chapel was later given the name Windische Kapelle , which - verifiably for the period from 1537 to 1565 - suggests its use by the Sorbian-speaking community. Since these services were then held in the monastery church of St. Annen , the chapel remained unused for many years.

The city fire of 1707 caused severe damage. The church was rebuilt by 1724 and then served for catechism lessons, the first catechist of which was Johann Gottfried Lessing , the father of the poet Gotthold Ephraim Lessing .

In 1999/2000 the church was repaired. Today the church is used for church services, baptisms , weddings and blessing ceremonies , and concerts are also held in summer.

Building description

Interior

The hall church with 3/8 end is located southeast of the choir of the main church St. Marien and presents itself extremely well-fortified in the form of a bastion, which protrudes far out of the fortified cemetery wall over steep terrain. This impression is underlined by the loopholes on the upper floor. The up to 1.50 meter thick, plastered enclosing walls are reinforced by buttresses . The steep gable roof is abge the east walmt , is on the west pediment a wrought iron cross. The choir windows are in two parts and decorated with simple tracery . Overall, the exterior refers to a time of origin in the 15th century.

The floor inside the church, which can be reached via a staircase, is 2.70 meters below the level of the cemetery and slopes further towards the east. Fighter consoles (and buttresses) suggest that the church was once vaulted or that there was at least a corresponding plan. The flat wooden ceiling, the parapets of the two-story galleries and the pulpit altar are painted with white and green tendrils on a red background. In the middle of the ceiling is an octagonal painting depicting Paul preaching in Athens , and above the altar is a smaller painting depicting the Ascension of Christ .
