Katharina Lins , religious name Josefa Nikolina (* November 7, 1788 in Zams ; † August 4, 1836 ibid) was an Austrian religious, founder of the first Tyrolean mother house of the Sisters of Mercy of Saint Vincent de Paul in Zams and its first general superior .

Life

Katharina Lins was born on November 7, 1788, the fourth of twelve children to a farming family in Zams. Her maternal uncle, Nikolaus Tolentin Schuler, was a Catholic pastor in the village and had founded a poor hospital on his own initiative from 1811 to 1820. His niece Katharina was one of the first sisters in the "Haus am Stollangerle" and was head of the sisterhood. In 1822 Katharina Lins went to Strasbourg at the request of her uncle , in order to be trained there for her future role as superior of an order of merciful sisters. On May 26, 1823, she made her vows and received the religious name Josefa Nikolina. She returned to Zams, took over the management of the local hospital and founded the Tyrolean motherhouse of the Sisters of Mercy with twelve nuns. The order itself had already been approved by Emperor Franz II on September 19, 1821 . Katharina Lins thus laid another cornerstone for the construction of the St. Vinzenz Zams Hospital . In 1830 and 1831 branches of the order were established in Ried and Imst, and finally in Vienna in 1832.

The Katharina Lins schools in Zams are named after her and consist of a practical school, a Catholic upper secondary school, an educational institution for kindergarten pedagogy and a health and nursing school.
