Life

Origin and family

As the daughter of the noble lord Heinrich von Frankenstein and his wife Elisabeth von Steinfurt (daughter of Balduin von Steinfurt and Elisabeth zur Lippe), Katharina von Frankenstein came from a noble family that had its origins in the Bad Salzungen area . Katharina's maternal great-grandparents were Bernhard zur Lippe and his wife Sophie von Ravensberg-Vechta.

Career and work

Before Katharina was elected abbess to succeed Lisa von Bentheim in 1328 or 1329 , she was a canoness in Borghorst before 1318 and owned a prebend here . She is one of the most important abbesses of Freckenhorst Abbey. Numerous documents are available from her term of office to prove this. Her endeavor was always to get back the goods and income that had been taken from the monastery by the church bailiffs . She had parts of the church rebuilt and the buildings destroyed by fire rebuilt. During the restoration of the church in 1841, mountains of rubble and ashes were found from the destroyed church roof. On October 2, 1350, she donated an annual amount of money to the Brotherhood of the Holy Cross. Katharina remained in office until her death. Her successor was Mechthild von dem Berge .
