history
The church was built between 1656 and 1695 according to plans by the architect Jean de la Vallée . It was named after Katharina Wasa, the sister of King Gustav II Adolf and mother of Karl X Gustav .
In 1723 the church was destroyed in a great fire that destroyed almost the entire Katarinaviertel. It was rebuilt under the direction of the city architect Göran Josuæ Adelcrantz (father of the better known Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz ). In 1990 the church burned again. Almost the entire inventory was destroyed. After the reconstruction, which cost around 280 million crowns, the church was consecrated again in 1995.
Swedish politician Anna Lindh is buried in the church's cemetery.
organ
The first organ was installed in the church in 1751 by the organ builders Jonas Gren and Petter Strahle. This instrument, which showed clear French influences, was reorganized in 1863 by the organ builder Per Larsson Akerman, and rebuilt and expanded in 1909 by the organ builder Akerman & Lund. In 1938 the instrument was equipped with pneumatic action . The instrument was destroyed in a fire in 1990.
The present organ was built in 2000 by the organ builder van den Heuvel. The case was designed according to the plans of the original case from 1751. The organ itself was arranged in the French style, based on instruments by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll. The organ has 61 stops on three manuals and a pedal. The game actions are mechanical, the stop actions are electric.
