Katharsis is a German black metal band.

history

The band was formed in 1994 without a name and shortly thereafter named Katharsis. Their first demo recording Terror, Storm and Darkest Arts was released in 1996, in the same year MK and Scorn also played briefly on Deathcult. While The Red Eye of Wrath was recorded by Scorn and D. Lohenburg, Drakh took over the split EP Determination Detestation Devastation with Nhaavah guitar, drums and vocals, Scorn guitar and bass. In 2000 Katharsis' debut album 666 with MK on drums was published in an edition of 200 copies. In 2001, in addition to several releases with other bands, the recording Rehearsal Tape for 2nd LP 2001 AB with four tracks for the second album was released as a preliminary version, but the recording was not intended to be swapped .

Drakh gave the last catharsis interview in April 2002 to the Horrible Eyes from Chemnitz. In the same year a split EP with Black Witchery was released.

The four tracks of the tape Rehearsal Tape for 2nd LP 2001 AB appeared on the second album Kruzifixxion in 2003 , which was published by Norma Evangelium Diaboli and N: C: U. Her next album VVorldVVithoutEnd was released in 2006, also with Norma Evangelium Diaboli, in the same year the song Archaic Ritual Infanticide in Obeyssance Towards Hell was released on the joint release Tormenting Legends Part II by Blut & Eisen Productions and WTC Productions. Apart from this, the band continued to publish with Norma Evangelium Diaboli.

style

The style of catharsis can be assigned to traditional Black Metal . The first album is strongly reminiscent of Darkthrone , a review of the second album Kruzifixxion describes the music on this as "normal, simply solid Black Metal with a few riffs that scream for more and with which you could deny better material", the album is alive of its magic. With VVorldVVithoutEnd the sound direction changed; The Darkthrone influences were retained, but the songs became (in some cases considerably) longer, the music became more chaotic, and no special instruments or effects devices were used, which, according to Stewart Voegtlin, is more difficult to digest. The guitars dominate the blurry production, the drums vary between blastbeats and rhythms in a medium tempo . The EP Fourth Reich, on the other hand, is a little less chaotic and therefore a little more catchy.

ideology

The band represents a religious, theistic Satanism . Drakh stresses that he has no interest in paganism or secular politics, and describes political radicalism in metal , such as the pagan, racist nationalisms widespread in some areas , as "philanthropic shit". Black / Death Metal is not about humanistic ideals like grace and the preservation of human life. Drakh therefore told Horrible Eyes that anyone who really believes in the Fourteen Words of the American right-wing extremist David Eden Lane belongs in the oven; these were on several publications from "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for White children" to "We must secure total annihilation of humanity and end all life on this planet" or "We must secure the depravation of the children and ruin the whole fukking world ” . Thus the title of the album Fourth Reich is to be understood theological and not political. Drakh, however, admits the political implications of derision and hostility towards human civilization and its religious aspects.

The band has an anti-commercial attitude and gave only a few interviews until 2002, then none. Drakh regards a majority of given interviews and printed t-shirts as a band sell-out. The band also doesn't give concerts because Drakh has no interest in them. But it reached a high level of awareness: Kruzifixxion and VVorldVVithoutEnd are in the hard-rock list of "250 black metal albums, you should know" section. In an online review they were referred to as "a band you know as a Black Metal friend" and "no further introduction is necessary".

Scorn and Drakh are fans of the band Sadistik Exekution , who are greeted with Nhaavah among others on the split EP Determination Detestation Devastation . Katharsis' lettering is influenced by the style of the sadistic execution singer Rok. The change from the early spelling of the pseudonym Drag to Drakh, on the other hand, is not an intended reference to the band.
