For the GDR ice hockey championship 1972/73 , the two dynamo clubs from Weißwasser and Berlin played again in the major league . Once again the team from Weißwasser became champions, celebrating their 20th title win.
The GDR determination of the best was again carried out in the form of a simple tournament round, as fewer than six teams had registered. This time, BSG Motor Optima Erfurt secured the title for the first time .

- BSG Chemie Leuna ( district Halle )
- BSG Monsator Berlin 2 ( Berlin )
Name changes
1 BSG Chemie 70 Rostock started in the preseason under the name VSG Rostock.
2 The BSG Monsator Berlin was based primarily on the squad of the disbanded top division club TSC Berlin and former squad players of SC Dynamo.
