The Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph ( English St. Joseph's Basilica ) is a Roman Catholic church in Edmonton , Canada . It is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Edmonton . Under the patronage of St. Joseph of Nazareth standing church also bears the title of a minor basilica .

history

The parish of St. Josef was founded in 1913 in the growing city of Edmonton as an English-speaking split from the then only francophone parish of St. Joachim. There was the construction of the crypt of the future parish church on the north side of the North Saskatchewan River started in 1917 took place the Abpfarrung . After Archbishop Legal initially named St. Anthony's Church as the pro-cathedral of the archdiocese, Archbishop Henry Joseph O'Leary announced St. Joseph as the future cathedral in 1925. The land was bought by the Hudson Bay Company for a 1000-seat church. For financial reasons, the community was only able to finish the crypt. Nevertheless, due to two world wars and the depression, the parish was not free from building debts until 1940. It was not until the spring of 1960 that Archbishop John Hugh MacDonald decided to proceed with the construction of the upper level of the church to implement the original plan of a cathedral church according to new plans from 1954 by the Montreal architect Henri LaBelle and his local partner Eugene Olekshy. The consecration took place by Archbishop Anthony Jordan on May 1st, 1963, the feast of St. Joseph the Worker. On March 15th, Pope John Paul II , who visited the church in the same year, also gave the cathedral the title of minor basilica .

The church was built as a three-aisled basilica with low side aisles and a transept. The cladding was done with quarry stone. The older crypt church is under the sanctuary. An atrium extends in front of the entrance area, the church has no tower.

Furnishing

Significant parts of the church furnishings are the 60 stained glass windows showing the Twelve Apostles , Old Testament figures and other scenes from the Bible. The organ with three manuals and one pedal has 3154 pipes in 40 registers and is distributed over two brochures above the entrance area. It was built from 1961 by the Casavant Frères company. After a fire in 1980, it had to be extensively restored due to smoke and water damage. The belfry is near the entrance on the roof of the right aisle.
